How many Nuclear Weapons Does the U.S. Need to Be Safe?

Since selling Ben & Jerry’s to Unilever in 2000, Ben Cohen has organized a non-profit organization, Business Leaders for Sensible Priorities. This group, composed of prominent business leaders on the left and the right, focuses on the pork in the defense budget that goes for the purchase and maintenance of the U.S. nuclear arsenal. Last Wednesday Kai Ryssdal, the host of the Public Radio show Marketplace, interviewed Ben. Simply citing the number of nuclear weapons in the U.S. arsenal often arouses no response. But ‘hearing’ that number will leave a lasting impression. I remember hearing Ben speak several years ago where he gave this demonstration. Now you can hear it. Will you soon forget the ‘sound’ of 150k nuclear weapons? (You will have to ‘listen to the story,’ not just read it, to get the full effect.) Do you feel safer now?
